    A review on research results and progress of carbon nanotubes filled with an exhaustive species of foreign materials. Synthesis methods, filling mechanisms, filling materials, and properties of filled carbon nanotubes are discussed.
    In particular, for applications involving semiconducting nanotubes (e.g., photocatalysis, transistors, and photovoltaics), our results identify the important role of the filling in modifying the SWCNT structure and tube–tube interactions. SWCNTs produced by CoMoCAT (ref no. 775533) were used as the raw CNT product.
    Synthesis methods, filling mechanisms, filling materials, and properties of filled carbon nanotubes are discussed. Important and interesting applications in magnetic, electrochemical, optical, biomedical, and other domains are exampled. Major achievements are summarized in three different tables for quick information and comparison.
