    Causes

    • It is caused by genetic mutations in normal cells leading to the formation of abnormal cancerous cells. These cells begin to replicate and invade other tissues.
    • The exact cause of the genetic mutations is not known. Certain forms have been linked to viral infection (for example Epstein-Barr Virus).
    • Risk factors include:
    • Having an Epstein-Barr virus infection
    • Sex- more common in males
    • Age- commonly diagnosed between ages 30 to 50
    • Family history

    Symptoms
    If you or someone you know is exhibiting symptoms of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, seek medical attention immediately.

    It does not cause symptoms in its early stages.

    Possible symptoms include:

    • A lump in the neck
    • Bloody saliva
    • Hearing loss
    • Nasal congestion
    • Bloody Nasal discharge
    • Recurrent ear infections
    • Headaches
    • Blurry or double vision

    Prevention

    There is no sure way to prevent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Avoiding the use of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, snuff) and alcohol reduces risk.

    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to metastatic cancer.
