    Causes

    • The cause is not clearly known but it is associated with
    • Abnormally dense group of extra blood vessels
    • Not usually hereditary, but 10% babies have a family history of vascular birthmarks
    • The risk factors include:
    • Girl babies
    • Premature babies
    • Caucasian infants are at higher risk

    Symptoms
    If you are experiencing new, severe, or persistent symptoms, contact a health care provider.

    It usually does not show any symptoms:

    • They appear as small red scratches or bumps
    • As they grow, they look like burgundy-colored birthmarks
    • Mostly occurs on the face, scalp, chest, neck or back
    • Grow larger into a spongy mass, then gradually start to disappear
    • They resolve on their own by age 5. It may leave a faded, faint mark

    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to

    • Can break down and lead to a sore
    • Bleeding
    • Scarring
    • Pain
    • Infection
