Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is defined as the infection of the central nervous system (CNS) and the meninges by the larval stage of Taenia solium, the pork tapeworm [ 1 ]. NCC is currently widespread and represents the most common helminthic infection of the central nervous system (CNS) [ 2 ].
Most of the pathophysiology of cysticercosis results (directly or indirectly) from acute or chronic inflammatory responses against the membranes and residual antigens of degenerating cysts. Controlling inflammation is, therefore, a cornerstone of approaches to limit the morbidity and mortality of neurocysticercosis.
Inflammation adjacent to the brain (or other brain structures), fibrosis, nerve impingement, infarcts, and (less commonly) cerebral hemorrhage, further contribute to the manifestations of this form of neurocysticercosis. 51 The most severe form of neurocysticercosis occurs when cysts become lodged in the basal subarachnoid space.
