Terrazzo is composed of naturally occurring aggregates, recycled glass or plastic and processed cement or epoxy binders. The binders constitute approximately 25 to 30 percent of the volume of the terrazzo floors; the remainder of the floor is composed of aggregates, pigments, and fillers.
Contemporary terrazzo is most commonly associated with the Venetian Pavement (pavimento alla Veneziana) where techniques for manufacturing and layering the materials were developed in the 18th century. Durable and highly resistant to water ingress when laid properly, marble chips were arranged on a mortar base.
After the entire surface is set and dried, the terrazzo is ground down using a heavyweight grinder similar to a floor polisher. After being ground down to level, the terrazzo is polished and sealed. Terrazzo can be installed as a solid surface flooring, or installers can use thin metal strips to divide terrazzo into sections.
